Step-by-Step GST Registration Process
Visit the GST Portal
Go to gst.gov.in → Services → Registration → New Registration.
Fill Part-A of Form REG-01
Select taxpayer type (Taxpayer / Composition / Casual). Enter your PAN, mobile number, and email address. Verify both with OTPs. You will receive a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) — save it.
Fill Part-B — 15 Sections
Use the TRN to log back in and complete Part-B. You have 15 days to complete after generating TRN. Sections include: Business details, legal name, trade name, business constitution, principal place of business, additional places of business, goods/services details, bank account details, state-specific details, Aadhaar authentication, and authorized signatory information.
Upload Documents
Upload scanned copies of PAN, Aadhaar, photos, address proofs, and bank documents as applicable to your business type (see checklist above).
Submit the Application
Submit using one of: Aadhaar e-sign (OTP-based, recommended — faster processing) or DSC (Digital Signature Certificate — required for companies). An Application Reference Number (ARN) is generated and sent to your mobile and email.
Receive GSTIN Certificate
If Aadhaar-authenticated: GSTIN issued within 7 working days automatically. If not Aadhaar-authenticated: A GST officer may conduct physical verification (site visit), taking up to 30 working days. The GST Registration Certificate (Form GST REG-06) is available on the portal.
GST Registration Fees
The government fee for GST registration is NIL — there are no government charges. Professional/CA charges for assisted registration typically range from ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 for simple cases. FinsyncX charges ₹999 for proprietorship registration.
How Long Does GST Registration Take?
- Aadhaar-authenticated applications: 7 working days
- Non-authenticated / physical verification: Up to 30 working days
- If officer issues Form GST REG-03 (clarification request): You have 7 working days to respond; total time may extend to 30 days
- Provisional GSTIN: If no action within 3 working days (Aadhaar authenticated), a provisional GSTIN is granted automatically
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Wrong PAN: Ensure the PAN entered matches exactly with Income Tax records
- Expired documents: Aadhaar and PAN must be valid and linked to each other
- Wrong address proof: The address in the utility bill must match the registered address
- Not selecting correct business activity: Choose the right HSN (goods) or SAC (services) codes in Section 8
- Bank account mismatch: Account should be in the name of the business/proprietor, not a personal account in another name
- Incomplete Part-B: The 15-day window to complete Part-B after TRN generation — if you miss this, you have to restart
